Shah Ast Hussain – II

After reading my earlier post, my dear friend Sheraz Haider has corrected the translation of the Persian quatrain Shah Ast Hussain as follows:

Ruler is Hussain, Emperor is Hussain,
Faith is Hussain , guardian of faith is Hussain .
Offered his head and not the hand to Yazid.
‘Indeed, Hussain is the foundation of La-ilah (the
declaration that none but God is absolute and almighty)

Sheraz further writes:

The sacrifice in Karbala reconstructed the religious thought in Islam, redefined faith, restored the dignity of human being, created a rich idiom for the discourse on truth, and finally led to evolve theological development in Islam.

The tragedy in Karbala encouraged intellectual discourse on the freedom-determinism debate. Abu Sa’id ibn Abi al-Hasan Yasar al-Basriemerged as the first one to announce that man is totally responsible for his actions. He argued this position in a letter to the Umayyad caliph ‘Abd al-Malik. “His letter, which is the earliest extant theological treatise in Islam, attacks the widely held view that “God is the sole creator of man’s actions”. His letter indicates that in early Islam theological disputes centered around struggle against monarchy, despotism and oppression.

The debate which started after the Karbala tragedy matured in to the intellectual wrangling among Mu’tazila -trying to give a rationally coherent account of Islamic beliefs- and Ash’ariyya-reacting against the excessive rationalism of the Mu’tazila.

Sheraz has touched upon a most profound trend following the Karbala and how anti-monarchy debates ensued within the faith. It is a shame that the battle continues today within and outside the Islamic world. However, we have the shining example of Imam Hussain not to compromise on principles and live and die for one’s ideals. Asad Ali in his comment points out:

…..we should not be the mourners of Imam Husain (AS) but we should be his followers.

I cannot agree more with Asad..

Abraham gave the name of Al-Islam. Through Moses and Jesus Islam was completed and perfected in Muhammad (peace be upon them all).
    (1) Abraham (the Patriarch of Islam)

“And (remember), when His Lord tried Abraham with His commands, and he fulfilled them, He said: Lo! I have appointed thee a leader for mankind”.
    (Quran 2 x 124)
“And I will make thee (O Abraham) exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee”.
    (Bible- Genesis XVII-6)
“And as for Ismael, I have heard thee (O Abraham): Behold! I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation”.
    (Bible-Genesis XVII-20)
    (2) Abraham to Mohammad -A line
“And when Abraham and Ismael, were raising the foundations of the house (of God in Mecca), (Abraham prayed), Our Lord accept from us (this duty). Lo! Thou, only thou art the hearer, the knower, our Lord! and make us submissive unto thee and of our seed a nation submissive unto thee, and show us our ways of worship, and relent toward us. Lo! Thou, only thou art the relenting, the merciful. Our Lord and raise up in their midst a messenger from among them who shall recite unto them thy revelations, and shall instruct them in the scripture and in wisdom, and shall purify them. Lo! Thou, only thou art the mighty, the wise”.
    (Quran 2 x127-129)
“When his Lord said unto him (Abraham) surrender! He said : I have surrendered to the Lord of the worlds. The same did Abraham enjoin upon his sons, and also Jacob, (saying) O My sons! Lo! Allah hath chosen for you the (true) religion; therefore die not save as men who have surrendered (unto Him)”.
    (Quran 2 x 131-132)
” Lo ! Abraham was a nation obedient to Allah, by nature upright, and he was not of the idolators; thankful for his bounties: He chose him unto a straight path. And we gave him good in the world, and in the hereafter he is among the righteous. And afterwards we inspired thee (O Mohammad), (saying) : Follow the religion of Abraham as one by nature upright. He was not of the idolators”.
    (Quran -XVI – 120-123)
    (3) Torah, Gospel and Quran in Succession
“Lo! We did reveal Torah wherein is guidance and a light, by it did the Prophets who professed Islam judge the Jews; and the doctors and the teachers (judged), by that portion of the book of God, of which they were the keepers and the witnesses. Therefore (O, Jews) fear not men but fear Me; and barter not away My signs for a mean price. And whoso will not judge by what God hath sent down—–such are the infidels. And therein have We enacted for them, life for life, and eye for eye, and nose for nose, and ear for ear, and tooth for tooth, and for wounds retaliation—-whoso shall compromise it as alms shall have therein the expiation (of the sins); and whoso will not judge by what God hath sent down—– such are the transgressors. And in the footsteps of the prophets caused We Jesus, the son of Mary, to follow, confirming the law which was before him. And we gave him the Evangel with its guidance and light, conformatory of the preceding law; and guidance and warning to those who fear God. And that the people of the Evangel may judge according to what God hath sent down therein. And whoso will not judge by what God hath sent down—- such are the perverse. And to thee (O, Mohammad) we have sent down the book (of the Quran) with truth, conformatory of previous scriptures, and their safeguard Judge therefore between them by what God hath sent down, and follow not their desires by deserting the truth which hath come unto thee. To every one of you we have given a rule and a beaten track”.
    (Quran 5 x 44-48)
    (4) Islam Ultimately Perfected in the Quran
“This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed my favours unto you, and have chosen for you as religion Al-Islam”.
    (Quran 5 x 3)
“The faith of your father Abraham. He hath named you Muslims of old time, and in this scripture (Quran, that the messenger (Muhammad) may be a witness against you, and that ye may be witness against mankind”.
    ( Quran 20 x 78)
“Say (O Muhammad) : We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto Us and that which was revealed unto Abraham and Ismael, and Issac and Jacob and the Tribes, and that which was vouchsafed unto Moses and Jesus and the prophets from their Lord, We make no distinction between any of them, and unto him we have surrendered. And whoso seeketh as religion other than Al-Islam ( the surrender to Allah). It will not be accepted from him, and he will be a loser in the hereafter”.
    (Quran 3 x 84-85)
” He (Allah) It is who hath sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all religion .And Allah sufficeth as a witness”.
    (Quran 48 x 28)
“Lo! The religion of Allah (is) Al-Islam. Those who formely received the scriptures differed only after knowledge came unto them, through transgression among themselves. Whoso disbelieveth the revelations of Allah (will find that) Lo! Allah is swift at reckoning”.
    (Quran 3 x 19)
“He (God) hath ordained for that religion which He commanded unto Noah, and that which we inspire in thee (O, Mohammad), and that which we commanded unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying establish the religion and be not divided therein”.
    (Quran 42 x13)
“When Allah entered into the covenant with the Prophets, He said: This is the wisdom and the book which I give you. Hereafter shall a prophet come unto you to confirm the scripture already with you. Ye shall surely believe on him, and ye shall surely aid him. Are ye resolved ? Said he, and do you accept the covenant of these terms. They said: We are resolved, be yet then witnesses, said He, and I will be a witness as well as you. And whoever turneth back after this, these are surely the perverse. Other religion than that of Allah desire they? To Him doth everything that is in the heavens and in the earth submit in willing or forced obedience, and to Him do they return”.
    ( Quran 3 x 81-83)
    (5) The prophecy of Torah about Muhammad Discussed
“My chastisement will fall on him whom I will, and my mercy embraceth all things, and I write it down for those who shall fear me, and pay the alms, and believe in Our signs, who shall follow the apostle, the unlettered prophet. Whom they shall find described with them in the Torah and the Gospel. What is right, will he enjoin them, and forbid them what is wrong, and will allow them healthful viands and forbid the impure, and will ease them of the burden, and of the yokes which were upon them; and those who shall believe in him, and help him, and follow the light which hath been sent down with him—-these are they with whom it shall be well. Say to them: O Men, verily I am God’s apostle to you all: Whose is the kingdom of the heavens and of the earth. There is no God but He. He maketh alive and killeth. Therefore believe on God and his apostle—–the unlettered prophet—–who believeth in God and His word. And follow Him, that ye may be guided aright”.
    (Quran 7 x 156-158)
Following is the prophecy of Moses in Torah about Muhammad (peace be upon him), as is alluded to by the Quran in above-quoted passage thereof. Moses said to the Children of Israel:-
“The Lord thy God will raise up onto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; according to all that thou desirest of the Lord thy God in horeb, in the day of assembly, saying, let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more that I die not. And the Lord said unto me, they have well (spoken that) which they have spoken. I will raise them a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words, in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass (that) whosoever will not hearken unto my words, which he shall speak in my name, I will require (it) of him. But the prophet which shall presume to speak a word in my name which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of the other Gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, how shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken. When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing followeth not, nor come to pass, that (is) the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, (but) the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously. Thou shalt not be afraid of him”.
    (The Bible- Deuteronomy XVIII-15-22)

” Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. It is not save an inspiration (of God) that is inspired in him, which one of the mighty powers hath taught him”.
    (Quran 53 x 2-5)
” Nay, I swear by all that ye see and all that ye see not, that it is indeed the speech of an illustrious messenger. It is not poet’s speech—-little is it that ye believe! Nor diviner’s speech———-little is that ye remember! It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds. And if he had invented false saying concerning us, we assuredly had taken him by the right hand and then severed his life-artery. And not one of you could have held us off from him”.
    (Quran 69 x 38-47)
And also that not one of the prophecies of the Quran has failed or proved false.
    (6) The Prophecy of Jesus about Muhammad Discussed
Quran says, Jesus prophecised about Muhammad by name:-
” And (remember) when Jesus, son of Mary, said: “O children ! (of Israel), ! Lo! I am the messenger of Allah unto you, confirming that which was (revealed) before me in Torah, and bringing good tidings of a messenger who cometh after me, whose name is Ahmad (Muhammad)”.
    (Quran 61 x 6)
The Prophecy of Jesus Christ about Muhammad, Peace be upon them both, in the Gospel:
Jesus Christ in his last days, and in realization of his approaching departure said to his disciples:-
” But I go my way to Him that sent me, and none of you asketh me, wither goest thou, but because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away: For if I go not away the “Comforter” will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment, of sin, because they believed not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my father, and ye see me no more; of judgement, because the prince of this world is judged.
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit, when he, the spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. For he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, (that) shall he speak: And he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me. For he shall receive of mine, and shall show (it) unto you. All things that the father hath are mine; therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you. A little while and ye shall not see me: And again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the father”.
    (Gospel-ST John XVI-5-16)
Discussing this marvellous prophecy of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him), we read:-
1). The word Comforter. For “if I go not away the “Comforter” will not come unto you”.
In the present English version of the Gospel appears the word Comforter. Previously in Greek translation of the Gospel, the Paracletos was there, which means advocate. Identical in sound with Paracletos stands the word Periclytos, which means exactly as the word “Ahmad” or “Muhammad” means, namely : The Praised one: glorified one. And this proves the statement of the Quran that Jesus prophecised about the Prophet of Islam by name that is Ahmad (Quran 61×6). The promised “Comforter” was believed by many Christian communities of the East to be a Prophet yet to come, and most of them accepted Muhammad as that Prophet. Nor the prophecy of Moses about the Arabian Prophet could be missed. Islam, however, today stands as a perfect, experienced truth and the most needed religion for this distressed mankind to offer the remedy for all the present day ills and to guide this mankind away from these atomic threats unto the path of real peace and real prosperity as against this illusive peace and illusive prosperity of Baconian culture.
2). ” I have yet many things to say unto you” Says Jesus, ” but ye cannot bear them now”. It means that the truth which Jesus had given was as yet to be developed and perfected.
3). Says Jesus “Howbeit, when he the spirit of truth, is come. He will guide you into all truth”. The Quran says :-
” And Lo! it is a revelation of the Lord of the worlds, which the true spirit hath brought down upon thy heart, that thou mayest be (one) of the warners, in plain Arabic speech. And lo! It is in the scriptures of the men of old”.
    (Quran 26 x 192-196)
The prophet (peace be upon him) himself was named as the truthful and the Honest, even before his assumption of his prophetic office. Says Jesus” When he the spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth”. Allah in the Quran says “Verily we have displayed for mankind in the Quran all manner of similitudes”.
    (Quran 18 x54)
Almighty Allah has explained in various ways all things to men in Quran; but of all things man is most contentious.
4). Says Jesus ” For He shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall bear, that he shall speak”. The Quran says “Nor doth he speak of his own desire. It is not save an inspiration (of God) that is inspired in him, which one of mighty power hath taught him”.
    ( Quran 53 x 2-5)
And indeed the angel brought the message of the Quran to Mohammad, peace be upon him, from Allah and spoke, and the prophet heard. The Quran says: “It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds. If he had invented false sayings concerning us, we assuredly had taken him by the right hand and then severed his life-artery”.
    (Quran-69 x 46)
5). Says Jesus ” And he will show you things to come”. Quran indeed is replete with prophecies and predictions. Some of which have seen their fulfillment, while some still await their fulfillment. Also, the Quran tells not only of the things of the future in this world, but has drawn a complete picture of the next life in heaven, not to be found either in the old or the new testament of the Bible.
    6). Jesus says:-
    ” He shall glorify me”
    The Quran says about Jesus:-
“Allah’s word which he conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from him”.
    (Quran 4 x 171)

“Illustrious in the world and the hereafter, and one of those brought near (unto Allah)”.
    (Quran 3 x 45)

    ” A revelation for mankind and a mercy from us”. (Quran 19 x 21)
“And his mother was a saintly woman”.
    (Quran 5×75)

” And Lo! We made the son of Mary and his mother a portent”.
    (Quran 23 x 50)
    7. Says Jesus” He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you”.
There is enshrined a great fact in this which Jesus has said. “He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you”. We will now exemplify this fact, the fact of the attestation of Gospel by the Quran and the development thereof. But before we do this let us see what new thought Jesus gave to Mosaic religion.
Jews were not only by nature a people steeped in the world, but their religion too appearing at a particular stage of development, had not taught them of otherworldliness, or disinterestedness, or resurrection. They were only taught how to live in this world in accordance with the commandments of their God, the Lord God of Israel. The idea of resurrection was taken by the Jews later from Eastern Religions. Christ appeared with his teachings of otherworldliness, disinterestedness and resurrection. His message was:-
” Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”.
    (Gospel- ST Matthew VI – 19 – 21)

” Therefore take no thought, saying, what shall we eat, or, what shall we drink? or, wherewithal shall we be clothed? —- But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow. For the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof”.
    (Gospel- ST Matthew VI – 31 – 34)
Now this was a strange teaching for the Jews. It neither was to their liking, nor was it comprehensible to them, for they had seen no such thing in their own Bible. Whatever, however, be the reaction of the Jews to such a message this was the evangelic introduction to the Old Testament. Six centuries before Jesus Christ when Issiah was Prophecying among the Jews in Babylon, Bhuda in India was teaching exactly what Christ preached to the Jews six hundred years later regarding the otherworldliness.
The Jewish people at the time of Jesus lived only in the outward ritual and the ceremonial without the inward meanings whatsoever. Jesus desired to introduce heart besides the head. This also was something new and novel for the Jews. The vested interests were also an obstacle. Jesus, however, told them what he had to tell in this respect. And his view of the Law may be cited as an example. He said:-
” Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart”. (Gospel-ST Matthew V 27-28)
Lex Talionis, that is the law of retaliation, life for life, tooth for tooth, was the basic rule of Jewish law, but Jesus preached:-” Ye have heard that it hath been said, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, that ye resist not evil: But whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also”.
    (Gospel St Matthew-V 38-39)
