Pakistani Civil Society Confronts Extremism

Yesterday, scores of civil society organizations demonstrated against the lunatic fringe that is currently attempting to take law in its hands and impose a myopic and sectarian vision of Islam on a diverse and plural society such as Pakistan. It was indeed heartening to read about civil society rallies against extremism. Thousands marched in the blistering heat on the streets of Lahore; and similar demonstrations were held in Islamabad, Karachi and Peshawar.

Yes it is true that the ‘moderate’ and ‘progressive’ forces are disunited and some would say in disarray but a beginning needs to be made.
